Do I Have To Forgive The Person Who Hurt Me?

Jesus commands forgiveness, and He never called it easy. What forgiveness actually is, what it is not, and what to do when you cannot get there yet.

A worn wooden kitchen table by a window at first light, two mismatched chairs facing each other, one turned away, with a cold cup of coffee in front of the empty chair

The question underneath the question

Somebody told you that you have to forgive.

They probably said it kindly. They probably said it fast, in the same breath they used to ask how you were doing, and then they moved on to the next thing while you sat there holding something they had no idea the weight of.

Maybe it was a parent. Maybe it was the person who was supposed to protect you and did the opposite. Maybe it was a friend who told the one thing you asked them to keep, or a spouse who left, or a man who is still walking around free while you are the one who cannot sleep.

And underneath the question you are asking out loud is a harder one.

Does forgiving mean it did not matter?

Because if that is what it means, everything in you refuses, and you should know that the refusal is not the sound of a bad heart. It is the sound of somebody who still believes that what happened was wrong. That instinct is right. Hold onto it. We are going to need it.

Here is what this piece will not do. It will not tell you the person deserves it. It will not tell you to go back. It will not tell you that if you had more faith this would already be behind you. And it is not going to skip the hard verse and leave you to find it later on your own.

✦

1. Start with the hard verse, not around it

Jesus taught His followers to pray. Right after the prayer, He stopped and doubled back on one line of it. Only one. This one.

Scripture · NKJV
"For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses."
Matthew 6:14-15 · NKJV

That is not a soft verse and there is no version of honesty that makes it one.

Notice what Jesus did here. Out of everything in that prayer, daily bread, God's name, God's kingdom, deliverance from evil, this is the line He came back to. He treated forgiveness as the part most likely to get quietly skipped. Two thousand years later He was not wrong.

So no, you cannot file this one under optional. It is a command, from Jesus, to people who had been genuinely wronged. He was not speaking to a room of people whose worst grievance was a rude comment. He was speaking under an occupying army, to people who knew exactly what it was to be on the losing end of power.

He knew what He was asking. Sit with that before you decide it is unreasonable.

✦

2. What that verse does not say

This is where most teaching on forgiveness does damage, so I want to be slow and specific.

Forgiveness is not saying it was okay. The word Jesus uses is trespasses. A trespass is a real violation of a real boundary. You cannot forgive something that was fine. The command assumes it was not fine. Forgiveness is not a verdict that the thing was small, it is a decision about what you do with something you have already judged to be large.

Forgiveness is not the same as trust. Trust is earned over time by proven behavior. Nothing in this passage tells you to hand your keys, your children, or your bank account back to somebody who has not changed. Forgiving a person and trusting a person are two different acts, and the Bible commands one of them.

Forgiveness is not reconciliation. Reconciliation takes two people. Forgiveness starts with one. Some relationships are restored and that is a good thing. Some are not, because the other person is unrepentant, unsafe, or dead. You can obey this verse with somebody you will never speak to again.

Forgiveness is not staying in danger. If someone is hurting you now, get to safety first. Nothing on this page asks you to remain within reach of someone who is harming you, and any teaching that does is misusing the text.

Forgiveness is not a feeling that arrives on schedule. Jesus commanded an action. He did not command an emotion, and He did not put a deadline on the ache. You can forgive someone on Tuesday and still cry about it in October. That is not failure. That is a wound healing at the speed wounds heal.

I want to flag something honestly. Those five distinctions come from reading the passage carefully and from the plain sense of the rest of scripture. They are not written out as a list anywhere in the Bible. I believe they hold. Read them as reasoning you can check, not as a verse.

✦

3. Why the prayer says debts

Look at the line Jesus doubled back on. In the prayer itself, He used a different word.

Scripture · NKJV
"And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors."
Matthew 6:12 · NKJV

Debts. Debtors. That is money language, and it is doing real work.

A debt is something genuinely owed. When you cancel a debt, you do not pretend the money was never borrowed. You do not decide the loan was imaginary. You absorb the loss yourself and stop trying to collect.

That is the picture. Somebody took something from you that they cannot give back. Your sense of safety. Years. A childhood. A marriage. There is no payment plan that returns it, and you know that, which is part of what makes this so heavy. Forgiveness is you stepping out of the collection business.

Not because the debt was not real. Because you are not the one who settles it.

The Bible says vengeance belongs to God, not to us, in Romans 12:19. That verse is often read as a restraint, and it is one. But read it the other way for a second. It does not say let it go, nobody is keeping score. It says God is keeping score, and He is better at it than you are. You are not dropping the case. You are handing it to a Judge who cannot be lied to and will not be too tired to care.

That is a completely different thing from pretending you were not robbed.

4. Why Jesus tied it to your own forgiveness

The part of Matthew 6:15 that frightens people is the second half. If you do not forgive, neither will your Father forgive you.

Read carefully what that is and is not doing. Jesus is not saying you earn God's forgiveness by forgiving. Scripture is not confused about how anyone gets right with God.

Scripture · NKJV
"For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast"
Ephesians 2:8-9 · NKJV

Not of works. If forgiving your father were the price of admission, that verse would be false.

What Jesus is describing is the shape of a life that has actually received grace. A person who has genuinely taken hold of being forgiven does not stay in the collection business. Not because they are stronger than you, but because they have done the math on their own account.

And here is where the math gets uncomfortable, which is exactly why He put it in the prayer. The same prayer that says forgive our debtors says forgive us our debts. You are in the sentence twice. Once as the person owed, and once as the person who owes.

That is not a trick to make you feel guilty for being hurt. What was done to you is not canceled out by anything you have ever done. It is a reminder of what standing you are actually praying from.

Scripture · NKJV
"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
1 John 1:9 · NKJV

Confess means say it plainly, as the thing it is. And notice, the promise is not that God will think about it.

And when you fail at this, and you will, on some ordinary afternoon when the memory comes back with all its teeth, you are not out of options.

Scripture · NKJV
"My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous."
1 John 2:1 · NKJV

An Advocate. Somebody arguing for you, right now, who is not surprised by how hard this is.

Scripture · NKJV
"Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need."
Hebrews 4:16 · NKJV

Boldly. Not once you have managed it. In time of need is the whole point of the sentence.

5. The part nobody softens here

I could stop and let this be a helpful article about letting go, and it would travel further. I am not going to, because it would leave out the only part that changes anything.

Being wronged is not your deepest problem. It is the loudest one, and it is real, and I am not minimizing it for a second.

Underneath it is this. Every one of us is separated from God by our own sin. Not by what was done to us. By ours. That separation is real, and no amount of self improvement closes it. That is why the forgiveness question cuts in both directions and why it will not leave you alone.

Here is what God did about it. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, fully God and fully man, lived the life we could not live and died the death we had earned. He was buried. On the third day He rose bodily. That happened in history, whether or not anyone feels it. When Jesus asked the Father to forgive the men who were killing Him, in Luke 23:34, He was not making a point about attitude. He was on His way to paying for it.

Scripture · NKJV
"Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”"
John 14:6 · NKJV

And the way in is not a program, and it is not a good enough attempt at forgiving your mother.

Scripture · NKJV
"that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved"
Romans 10:9 · NKJV

A person, and your yes.

Do not read this backwards. Nobody has to forgive their way to God. You come as you are, still angry, still holding it, and the forgiving starts on the other side of that door with help you do not currently have.

✦

6. What to do when you cannot get there yet

Some of you have read all of this and agreed with all of it and still cannot do it. I believe you. Here is what I would actually say.

Say the true sentence to God. Not the sentence you think a Christian is supposed to say. The real one. "I do not want to forgive him." That is a prayer. It is a better prayer than a polished lie.

Scripture · NKJV
"For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.”"
Romans 8:15 · NKJV

Cry out. Family language. Not a stranger filing a request through the correct channel.

Stop waiting to feel it. Forgiveness in scripture is a decision you make and then keep making. Peter asked Jesus how many times he had to do it, in Matthew 18:21-22, and the answer he got was a number designed to end the counting. If it comes back tomorrow, you have not failed. You have Tuesday's version of the same decision to make.

Do not do it alone. Ephesians 4:32 and Colossians 3:13 both put forgiveness inside a community of people doing it together, which is a strong hint that it was never meant to be a private act of willpower. Tell one safe person the true thing.

Know what you are actually fighting.

Scripture · NKJV
"For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places."
Ephesians 6:12 · NKJV

The voice that keeps rehearsing the injury at two in the morning and telling you this defines you is not reporting the news. It has an agenda. Treat it accordingly.

And know where God is while you work on this.

Scripture · NKJV
"The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit"
Psalm 34:18 · NKJV

Near is a position, not a feeling. He is not standing at a distance waiting for you to get this right before He comes back.

✦

If you take one thing

Forgiveness is not saying the debt was not real. It is refusing to be the one who collects it.

You are not letting them get away with anything. You are handing the case to the only Judge who sees all of it, and stepping out from under a weight that was never yours to carry.

And it will not happen by trying harder. It happens to people who are being changed.

Scripture · NKJV
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new"
2 Corinthians 5:17 · NKJV

Not overnight. Not by your effort. You.

If you have never said yes to Jesus, do not wait until you have your heart sorted out first. That is backwards, and waiting for it will cost you years.

FAQ

Do I have to forgive someone who has not apologized? Matthew 6:14-15 does not make forgiveness conditional on the other person's repentance. It does not, however, command you to restore trust or resume a relationship with someone who has not changed. Forgiveness starts with one person. Reconciliation takes two.

Does forgiving mean I have to let them back into my life? No. Nothing in Matthew 6:14-15 addresses access. Forgiveness releases a debt. It does not grant proximity, and it never requires you to remain where you are being harmed.

What if I forgive and then the anger comes back? That is normal and it is not a failure. Jesus answered Peter's question about repeated forgiveness in Matthew 18:21-22 with a number meant to stop the counting. Feelings follow decisions slowly, and grief has its own clock.

Am I not forgiven by God if I cannot forgive yet? Salvation is by grace through faith, not by works, as Ephesians 2:8-9 states. Matthew 6:15 describes what a forgiven life looks like, not a fee you pay to get one. If you are struggling with this, say so plainly to God. 1 John 1:9 and Hebrews 4:16 are both written for exactly that moment.

Does forgiving mean the person faces no consequences? No. Romans 12:19 places vengeance with God rather than with us. Reporting a crime, ending a relationship, or setting a hard boundary are not violations of forgiveness. They are separate decisions about safety and justice.
