How Do I Pray When I Do Not Know What to Say?

You want to pray but the words will not come. Here is what the Bible says about who you are talking to, why you do not need polished words, and where prayer begins.

The blank page problem

You sat down to pray and nothing came.

Maybe you have never prayed. Maybe you grew up around prayers that sounded like a language you were never taught. Maybe you used to pray every day, and now you open your mouth and the words are gone.

So you close it again. And you wonder if that silence counts as failing.

Let me say it plainly: prayer is not a performance, and you do not need a script to start. Prayer is talking to God. That is all it is, and it is more than enough.

✦

1. Who you are talking to matters more than what you say

Most people get stuck on the words because they are worried about the listener. They picture someone distant, impatient, waiting for the right phrase.

Scripture describes something else.

Scripture · NKJV
"For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.”"
Romans 8:15 · NKJV

"Abba" is the word a child uses for a father. It is close, plain, and unpolished. Paul is describing how a person who belongs to God is able to speak to Him: not as a stranger filing a request, but as a son or daughter.

Which means the first prayer does not have to be eloquent. It can be one honest sentence said to someone who is listening.

✦

2. You can say the real thing

Jesus taught that prayer is not a stage.

Scripture · NKJV
"But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly."
Matthew 6:6 · NKJV

Shut the door. No audience. Nobody is grading it.

If all you have is "I do not know what to say," say that. If all you have is anger, say that. If all you have is "I am tired and I do not know if You are there," say that too.

Here is a prayer from a man in the Gospels who was honest in exactly this way. He wanted help for his child, he was not sure his faith was enough, and he said so.

Scripture · NKJV
"Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!”"
Mark 9:24 · NKJV

That is the whole prayer. It is six words and it is mixed up and it is true. Nobody in the story told him to come back when he had sorted himself out.

3. Come boldly, not cleanly

Some people do not pray because they feel too far gone. They think the door is closed until they have cleaned themselves up.

The Bible says the opposite about who is able to sympathize with you.

Scripture · NKJV
"For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin."
Hebrews 4:15 · NKJV

And then the invitation that follows it:

Scripture · NKJV
"Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need."
Hebrews 4:16 · NKJV

Boldly. Not once you have earned it. You come to a throne of grace because you need mercy, and that is the reason you are allowed in.

If something specific is sitting on you, say it plainly.

Scripture · NKJV
"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
1 John 1:9 · NKJV

To confess means to say what you did as the thing it is. No spin. The promise attached is not that God will consider it. It is that He is faithful and just to forgive.

The Bible also says the Holy Spirit helps believers who are too weak to find words. That is in Romans 8:26. If you belong to Christ, a prayer that falls apart in your mouth is not a prayer that fell on the floor.

✦

4. A simple way to start

If you want a shape, here is a plain one. Nothing about it is required, and none of it is a formula that forces God's hand.

Say who you are talking to. "Father," or "Jesus," or "God." Start there.

Say what is true. What you are feeling, what you did, what you are afraid of. Real, not tidy.

Say what you need. Jesus did not hide from asking. He told His followers:

Scripture · NKJV
"Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full."
John 16:24 · NKJV

Hand over the weight. The Bible gives this direction for anxiety:

Scripture · NKJV
"Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."
Philippians 4:6-7 · NKJV

Notice what is promised there: peace that guards your heart and mind. It does not say every request will be granted the way you ask. I will not tell you that either. God has not promised it, and a prayer life built on a promise He did not make will crack the first time it is tested.

Then stop. You can end with "Amen," which only means "so be it." Come back tomorrow. Short and honest and repeated beats long and polished and rare.

If you want to see how Jesus Himself taught people to pray, read Matthew 6:9-13 slowly. It is short, and it is worth reading more than once.

✦

5. The part nobody softens here

I could stop here and leave you with a few tips for talking to God, and it would be easy to share. But it would leave out the reason you are allowed to talk to Him at all.

Prayer is not a technique that works on everybody. It is a relationship, and the relationship has a door.

Every one of us is separated from God by our own sin. Not by our words, not by how we sound, not by how long it has been. By our own sin. That separation is real, and nothing we do on our own closes it. That is why a perfect prayer would not fix it either.

Here is what God did about it. He did not wait for us to get it together.

Scripture · NKJV
"But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
Romans 5:8 · NKJV

Jesus Christ, the Son of God, fully God and fully man, lived the life we could not live and died the death we had earned. He was buried. On the third day He rose bodily. That happened in history, whether or not anyone feels it. He took our place, and that is what opens the door.

Scripture · NKJV
"Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”"
John 14:6 · NKJV

And the way in is not a program or a probation.

Scripture · NKJV
"that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved"
Romans 10:9 · NKJV

A person, and your yes.

If you have never said yes to Jesus, you can start there, with the simplest prayer there is. Something like: "Jesus, I have sinned and I cannot fix it. I believe You died for me and rose again. I am Yours." If you mean it, you have prayed. Tell another believer you trust, and find a Bible to start reading.

Then something begins that is bigger than a better prayer life. You become a child who has a Father, and the next time you sit down and the words will not come, you are no longer talking into the dark.

✦

If you take one thing

You do not need the right words. You need to be honest, and you need to start. He is listening to a child, not grading a speech.
