Why Should I Read the Bible?

Why read the Bible at all? A plain answer for seekers and new believers: what it is, what it is for, where to start, and what it does not promise.

Maybe someone gave you a Bible and it has been sitting on a shelf. Maybe you tried to read it once, got lost in the names and the rules, and quit. Maybe you are not sure it is more than an old book.

This is a plain answer to a fair question: why should I read the Bible?

✦

1. It is not a rulebook first. It is a record of God reaching for people.

The Bible does tell us how to live. But that is not where it starts. It starts with a God who made everything and everyone, and who is knowable rather than distant.

It then tells the hard truth about us. Every person is made by God and separated from Him by their own sin. That separation is real, it is our doing, and nothing we do to improve ourselves closes it.

And then it tells you what God did about it. That is the reason to read it.

2. The center of the Bible is Jesus Christ

Scripture · NKJV
"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."
John 3:16 · NKJV
Scripture · NKJV
"But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
Romans 5:8 · NKJV

Jesus is the Son of God, fully God and fully man. He lived the life we could not live and died the death our sin had earned. He was buried. On the third day He rose bodily (1 Corinthians 15:3-4 says this plainly, and it is worth reading for yourself). That happened in history, whether or not anyone feels it.

Everything else in the Bible either points toward that, explains it, or shows what it changes in a person. If you read the Bible and miss Jesus, you have missed the point of it.

✦

3. Why the Bible, and not just your own thoughts?

Because our own thoughts are the thing we cannot step outside of. We tend to believe what is comfortable and explain away what is hard.

Scripture · NKJV
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths."
Proverbs 3:5-6 · NKJV

The Bible holds that Scripture is the Word of God and the authority over how we live. Paul told Timothy that Scripture comes from God and is useful for teaching, correcting, and training a believer (2 Timothy 3:16-17). That is why it can tell you something you did not already believe, and why it can correct you when you are wrong.

A book that only ever agreed with you would not be worth opening.

✦

4. Faith grows by hearing God's Word

Paul wrote that faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God (Romans 10:17). You do not have to manufacture belief out of nothing. You put yourself in front of what God has said, and He is the One who does the work.

Salvation itself is by grace, through faith in Jesus Christ alone. Romans 10:9 states it simply: confess Jesus as Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead. Reading the Bible does not save you. Jesus does. But the Bible is where you meet Him, and where you learn what He has said.

✦

5. Read it to do it

Scripture · NKJV
"But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves."
James 1:22 · NKJV

Reading the Bible to collect facts, or to feel religious, misses what it is for. James warns that hearing without doing is a way of fooling ourselves.

Salvation is the door, not the destination. Grace produces a changed life: repentance, forgiveness given as it was received, and obedience that grows. Scripture is how that growth is shaped. It shows you what to turn from, what to trust, and who to follow.

6. Where to start

You do not start at page one and push through. Most people give up in the middle of Leviticus.

Start with the Gospel of John. It was written so that people could know who Jesus is. Read one short section at a time. Ask three plain questions after each one: What does this say about Jesus? What does it say about me? What is one thing I should do or stop doing?

Then talk to God about it, in your own words. Prayer is not a performance. It is honesty with the One who already knows. Psalm 119:105 describes the Word as a lamp and a light for the path, and you will find that is how it works in practice: enough light for the next step, not the whole road.

If you can, read with a believer you trust. Things you miss alone, someone else may see.

✦

7. If you have never put your trust in Jesus

Do not wait until you understand the whole Bible. Nobody does. You can tell God the truth today: that you have sinned, that you believe Jesus died for you and rose again, and that you are trusting Him. Then keep reading, because that is where you get to know Him.

✦

What this does not promise

Reading the Bible does not guarantee an easy life, a fixed problem, a restored relationship, or a feeling every morning. God has not promised those things. Some days the words will feel clear and some days they will not. What He has promised is Himself, and that His Word is worth trusting when it is hard.

Questions people actually ask

Which Bible should I read? This ministry uses the New King James Version. Any faithful, readable translation will help you start. What matters most is that you actually open it.

Do I have to understand everything? No. Start with what is clear and act on it. The rest comes over time.

Is the Bible really God's Word, or just a good book? This ministry holds that the Bible is the Word of God and the authority over its teaching. You are welcome to test that by reading it for yourself, beginning with what it says about Jesus.

What if I read it and feel nothing? That is common and it does not mean you failed. Keep reading, keep praying, and keep reading with someone. God has not promised a feeling. He has promised to be found by those who come to Him.
